My students really enjoyed this project. I used it in my regular 8th grade class as well as my PAP Algebra 1 class with slight modifications. The rubric I'm uploading here is the one I used for my 8th grade students.
Students are tasked with "drawing a picture" in Desmos. Desmos is an in-browser, totally free application that is wonderful! Students should login using a Google account, or create a free desmos account, so that they can save their work and revisit it at a later point. Students download an image from the internet and paste it into Desmos. Then, using what they know about linear functions, they generate equations of lines in an attempt to trace the photo. One of the things I did have to teach them prior to this project that is not an 8th grade standard was how to graph lines with a restricted domain and/or range. They picked it up pretty quickly, though!
This project is a ton of fun and it allows students to express themselves creatively. This purchase includes a detailed outline of the project, along with step-by-step and how-to instructions with navigating Desmos, and sample projects from students from previous years.
