Learning to fluently recognize and understand vocabulary is essential to an algebra students success... But it doesn't have to be a bummer to learn! This is a fun vocabulary puzzle that helps students become more fluent in defining words related to linear equations vocabulary. You can cut out the puzzle and laminate the pieces for a reusable station, or just have the students cut them out.

Includes:

  • 25 vocabulary words on 21 puzzle pieces in mixed up order
  • Solution page (puzzle put together)
  • Student reflection sheet

*I usually have the first class cut them out, then save them for the next classes so the next classes don't have to spend time cutting them out.

The pieces are numbered so you can make sure all the pieces are there! This also helps if you want to discuss a word - you can tell them what piece to find.

The kids are always motivated to get the puzzle put together first. Even the answers that are not used help students, as they have to discuss what the words mean to figure out that there is no match.

Attend to precision. Mathematically proficient students try to communicate precisely to others. They try to use clear definitions in discussion with others and in their own reasoning. They state the meaning of the symbols they choose, including using the equal sign consistently and appropriately. They are careful about specifying units of measure, and labeling axes to clarify the correspondence with quantities in a problem. They calculate accurately and efficiently, express numerical answers with a degree of precision appropriate for the problem context. In the elementary grades, students give carefully formulated explanations to each other. By the time they reach high school they have learned to examine claims and make explicit use of definitions.
Explain what a point (𝘹, 𝘺) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0, 0) and (1, 𝘳) where 𝘳 is the unit rate.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. For example, given coordinates for two pairs of points, determine whether the line through the first pair of points intersects the line through the second pair.
Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously.
Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
