Description

This activity is designed to have students practice sorting word probelms based on the type of equation required, setting up equation to model the given scenario, and solving the word problems using a graphing calculator, such as Desmos.

Instructions: Pass out a set of cards to each group. Have students sort the cards into four groups based on the type of equation that will be used to model the word problem – Linear (Slope-Intercept), Linear (Standard), Exponential, or Quadratic. After having their groups checked, have the students select which type of problem they would like to practice modeling and solving first. Then pass out the corresponding worksheet to each group (you could also pass out all worksheets at once). Instruct students to write an equation to model each scenario, then use it to answer the questions provided (using a graphing calculator, such as Desmos).

Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship.
