For this project students are instructed to create their own business as they learn, or after they have learned, about linear functions. Their business must sell a product or service for a constant rate (providing a constant slope), so that each student is able to write a linear function to model the profit of their business. The project involves students creating tables, graphs, and written descriptions of their functions. It is also a great project to differentiate! Students can make more or less complex functions based upon their readiness level.
This document contains a full description of the project and its requirements, the academic vocabulary the students will learn and use, the questions students must answer in their project presentation, and the 8th grade Common Core Mathematics Standards that the project addresses.
