Description
Looking for a math project that connects linear relations to a situation students can relate to? The Comparing Phone Plans Rich Task challenges students to model, compare, and analyze three different cell phone data plans.
Students represent each plan with an equation, a table, and a graph, then interpret rate of change and y-intercepts. They apply this information to decide which plan is best for different users, considering both the math and real-world factors like usage habits.
This project works well as a summative assessment, end-of-unit project, or enrichment activity. It is fully editable so you can adjust plan details or prices to reflect local providers.
What’s Included:
- Multi-part student task with realistic cell phone plan details
- Space to create equations, tables, and graphs for each plan
- Multiple analysis and reflection questions to guide students in interpreting results, reflecting on representations, and connecting to real-world contexts
- Single-point rubric for teacher assessment
- Worked example/exemplar to set clear expectations
Skills Covered:
- Writing and interpreting linear equations
- Creating and analyzing tables and graphs
- Determining rate of change and y-intercept meaning in context
- Making data-driven decisions
- Connecting mathematical models to real-world situations
By the end of this project, students will have strengthened their understanding of linear relations and developed practical decision-making skills they can use outside the classroom.
