In this hands-on activity, students learn discover the impact of a vertical translation on a linear function. Students start with the graph for y=x and perform vertical translations up or down.
Also included is an Interactive Notebook Activity where students can complete the dominoes activity with mini-dominoes sized for their notebook. There are two versions - one where students match only the graph and one where students write the equation of the graph as well.
This activity aligns with CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.BF.B.3: Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) with f(x)+ k, … for specific values of k (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs.
This activity promotes active engagement and mathematical discussions as students work together to match their problems and answers and solve the puzzle. If they solve the problem correctly, they find the answer piece and continue working, but if they don’t, they must help to correct the mistake before they can move on. Students will create problem solving techniques as they work through this activity. This activity is great for math centers, stations and rotations or whole group instruction.
