Product Description
This is a lino block carving technical activity I gave to my printmaking class. My class consisted of at-risk students with not a lot of prior art background so I created this step-by-step instructional package for them.

It contains clear steps on how to create a lino block carving of their name on a 6" x 4"plate (but can be done on other sizes too). Every step comes with photographs of me doing the activity. The instructions also review safety and key ideas to keep in mind about lino block printing.

To ensure that my students understood the instructions and safety rules, I had them answer seven questions about this instructional package before I gave them a lino block and lino cutter. Those questions are included in this file. It is out of ten marks and quite easy to mark.

What is not included is the template I gave to my students to draw on. The template is pretty simple though. All I did was take a piece of paper and traced the lino block that we were using. I also typed up my specific requirements (must have a decorative border and carve at least three block letters). Then students drew inside the box that I traced out for them. It is better you create your own template since this activity can be adjusted according to what supplies and size you have available.

The learning goals for this activity are:
- Reviewing instructions and safety prior to an activity
- Lino block safety
- How to transfer an image from paper to a lino block
- How to carve letters on a lino block so that they print correctly
- How to print from a lino block

Although I gave this activity to my senior art students, this is a perfectly suitable activity for younger grades as well. I put down 1 hour for this activity, but the length of it is really dependent on your students' abilities and any modification you make to the assignment. (E.g. requesting students create a border around their name, make it in block letters, use fancy scripts, ask for more than three letters, etc.)
