Using the book, The Lion’s Share by Matthew McElligott,
students create pies for different animals to share.
Included are cards for different animals. Students think
about what those types of animals eat and create a pie
for them. They then cut out the slices to represent the
equality, as well as the signs for each one (see example
below). I included already printed signs for those students
who struggle with writing, or for time management.
Another suggestion is to keep the pages together, and create
a class fraction book! It’s a great way to study fractions,
as well as incorporate animal studies! Blank cards are
available for you to fill in animals (i.e. if you’re doing a polar
unit or desert unit!).
