I love this lab for teaching density! I have used in my middle school science classes for 8 years now and will continue to use it for the rest of my career. Not only does it demonstrate the property of density because different liquids float on top of other liquids, but it is easy to set up (once all the materials are gathered) and much easier to clean up than density labs with syrups and oils. I have tried those density labs with different liquids, syrups, and oils and the prep work and clean-up is a nightmare!
Included is a list of supplies (with pictures!) for this lab. I have found that these materials work the best, through many trials and errors, but of course you can substitute as you see fit. Most of the materials you can find at your local grocery or big box store. Others can be order from science supply companies.
There are also complete directions for set-up and storage as well as directions for helping your students complete the activity. I have also included an answer key.
