This worksheet is designed to take your students through four different steps:
1. List- In first grade I have students copy a word study list of 10-12 words. For higher level grade you can give them an article or text to read and ask them to pull out 10-12 important content words.
2. Group- Have the students group the words into categories. You can have as many or few categories as desired. Letting students pick their own categories helps them make a connection to their thinking and new information.
3. Label- Label each group with what makes them all the same. Just like when we create schema in our brain, we need a way to categorize these.
4. Write- What does it all mean? How can you take all this information and summarize it into a few sentences.
Like I said, in First Grade we use this for our word study. I'll list words with patterns that make the long a sound. Students will group, label and summarize these patterns and are more likely to remember the new information they learned.
