I created both lessons as part of a social studies syllabus - ' People and Place'. Both lessons can act as 'stand alone' units or can be used in conjunction to compare the country and city.
Both lessons focus on the composition of list poems - 'In the Country' and 'In the City' with an added emphasis on grammar and word classes in particular - nouns, adjectives and 'ing' verbs. The lessons provide a meaningful context for grammar teaching as well as discussion about each place. The word choices are embedded within the composition of the poems and successfully combine grammar with poetry composition.
I have included opportunities for the children to actively participate e.g. 'quick fire' whiteboard work - identifying which words are nouns, verbs or 'ing' words. Throughout both lessons, there are opportunities for discussion in pairs or trios. I have also ensured differentiation by providing an extended poetry task for more able writers as well as a supported opportunity for less able writers.
Hope that you enjoy using these resources .
