I am constantly looking for ways in which to sharpen my students' listening skills. With the Common Core curriculum and all of the standardized testing that is required of them, this is a particularly important skill to develop and hone, yet also much more challenging in a world in which we, as teachers, are competing with stimulation that is hitting our students from every direction.
This podcast can be heard over the course of two to three typical class periods. The podcast is about 50 minutes long and can be divided into two or three parts depending upon the length of your class periods. Freakonomics' episode on early education, entitled: Does "Early Education" Come Way Too Late is a podcast that explores early education and the many questions that are asked as we, as a nation, attempt to improve it. In our zest to reform schools-including schools of early education, in order to narrow the achievement gap, researchers have found that we have lost sight of the fact that most learning happens at home.
This product includes:
* A teacher guide on how to use the product (including a link to the podcast)
* Comprehension and discussion questions for the podcast
* Two deeper thinking questions for discussion or debate
* An answer key
This lesson for students in grades 7-12 will last 2-3 class periods (more if you want to extend discussion/debate time in class), and could also provide 3-4 evenings of homework.
