A back to school, following directions reading activity to use with your class to stress the importance of directions in all subject areas. This is a great addition to your classroom management system. I used this activity with my third grade classroom after we had read "Guys from Space", but it can be a stand alone activity for grades second through fourth. Students listen to a short read aloud and draw the “alien.” Students then compare their drawings with partners to see how others visualized the alien. It is a great way to stress following directions in second through fourth grade classroom.
As an extension to this activity, I have each student complete the information on the bottom of the portrait page. Each student…
Names the alien.
Tells where it came from.
Explains their alien’s special talent.
Lists any unusual habits.
Includes its favorite food.
I then take all the alien portraits and create a class book for our class library. I have included two title pages for your class book. One is in color and the other is black and white.
