I have used what I call "Listening Journals" when I teach units on Music History. This helps me direct students' listening, especially to genres of music they are not familiar with. It also doubles as a graphic organizer for students to reference the title and composer of the piece of music, any information about the music (background information). I have collaborated with writing teachers to make sure students are using their writing strategies and skills in all subject areas. This template is completely customize-able to help students that need more explicit guidance in their listening up to the higher grades where a question can be posed and students can be free-writing within the parameters of the question. I have left in as an example the listening activity I did with my 8th graders on the hip-hop song "My Adidas"
