This was a fun listening and movement activity for 1st grade using "March of the Belgian Parachutists" by Pierre Leemans. First I taught the movements without the music (showing association with pictures), then pointed to the pictures as they did the movements with the music.
Intro (leaves): face middle of circle and wiggle fingers
Part A (squirrel): march, pretending to hold acorns- to the right for 2 counts of 8, then to the left for 2 counts of 8
Part B (tree): stand still, face middle and wave arms overhead- pretend to shake off leaves
Part C (different squirrel)- take 4 tiptoe steps into the middle of the circle, pretending to reach up high, then 4 tiptoe steps backwards. Repeats 4 times.
This is only the first 1:20 minutes of the song. Right after this part the brass joins in, so I had them march around pretending to play their trombones.
This was a good intro to winter lesson- we talked about why squirrels would be saving all those acorns!
