I recently started doing Lit Circles with my students in 3rd grade. It took a lot of trial and error to come up with this document I have created. In my class, students read their story together with their group for about 15 minutes a day. Then, they decided on their homework as a group for the next night (usually 5-10 pages). Along with their reading, they also have a job or a role in their group (New Word Detective, Silly Sketcher, Discussion Director, or Passage Picker) to complete for homework. The next day the students share their findings with their group before picking up again with the story. I believe I have found a good balance (for my class at least) for students to have a good interaction with the story on their own as well as in the group. This activity only takes about 10 minutes of homework time.
