Kindergarten Literacy Bags
We have been using Math Bags for years and have seen a lot of great things come from them. We wanted a similar format for our Language Arts block (and we had several requests from Math Bag fans)....thus, Literacy Bags were born! When we created these, we wanted a system in which the students could work on independent LA activities while we meet with students in small groups. We didn’t want to...
- change LA centers every week - 2 weeks OR
- use tons of colored ink (which is often paid for by teachers!) OR
- have lots of papers to grade
Basically, Literacy Bags are LA activities that can be done independently. There are 10 Literacy Bags for each of the main LA strands; Reading Foundational Skills, Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, and Language. Each Literacy Bag is designed so that it can be done by one student or a pair of students. We worked to make the Literacy Bags engaging, but also at a skill level where students can work independently. The activity direction pages were made in a kid friendly manner (with both words and pictures) to limit the need to ask questions while the teacher is busy with other students. Just like the Math Bags, Literacy Bags do not have a written response worksheet to be completed or “turned in.” We feel we have plenty of opportunities to grade work outside of this time in our day. With Literacy Bags, students manipulate task cards, clip answers with a clothespin, match cards together, etc., but do not write their answers on a worksheet. Literacy Bags are printed on color card stock and DO NOT require color ink!
