Idioms are a combination of words that are used every day but when used together they have a different meaning than the meaning of each word. The individual words in the idiom don’t usually help students understand it. They just have to know what it means.
Idioms can be tricky to learn. This literacy center uses definitions, fun illustrations, and sentence writing to help your students better understand idioms. Idioms are fun to read, but they’re even more fun for students to use in their writing. They liven up their writing and give it more of a personal voice.
This center includes the idioms: hit the sack, bury your head in the sand, broken hearted, blown away, target on her back, light at the end of the tunnel, kept in the dark, in hot water.
