The letter c can make spelling tricky for students because the letter c has two sounds, a hard sound and a soft sound. The letter c makes the hard sound in words such as “cat” or “cup” and the soft sound in words such as “city” and “circle.”
Usually, a c sound is hard or soft depending on the vowel that follows it. Here's the general rule:
• When c meets a, o, or u, its sound is hard.
• When c meets e, i, or y, its sound is soft.
In this Turkey themed center, students have hands on opportunity to practice sorting pictures according to whether the picture has the soft sound or the hard sound. Students will then record the results on their worksheet and create sentences using those words to further reinforce their learning.
