Santa’s Bag Literacy Circle Activity for Beginning Sounds
A prerequisite to reading is learning the letters and the sounds that each letter makes. Phonemic awareness is the ability to perceive individual sounds in spoken language. It is this awareness that makes learning to read with phonics fun and easy. It begins with sound isolation. Children need to be able to isolate the beginning sound of a spoken word in order to understand, learn and remember letter-sounds.
This Christmas themed circle activity lets students practice beginning sound skills for the letters D, P, S, L, J, T, F. Students will take turns choosing a picture on a bag and deciding what the beginning sound is for that word. Next they go up and place the bag on the correct Christmas card that contains three bags.
This circle time activity also contains a companion worksheet that students can complete on their own, to further reinforce the group activity.
