Did you ever wonder what to do with those students who are reading above a first grade level? These generic comprehension sheets
will solve that problem! They can be used in many different ways for enrichment, Literature Circles and more.
How I have used these in my classroom:
If I have a few students who need enrichment during Guided Reading Groups.
I have theses students select a chapter book. They ALL read the same book independently or with a partner.
. I only meet with this group 2 days per week
to set up the story, make predictions, discuss what we already know about the characters (if it is from a series we have previously read), and to just chat about any questions we might have or what we might wonder about.
Then we set up reading a chapter from the story and the individual students or partners choose which “job”
is for them. They may choose “Comprehension Checker,” “Predictor Chap” or “Summary Summarizer.”
At times I will assign the “jobs.”
of stations, the students go off during Literacy Station time and read the chapter we have decided and fill in the sheet. They know that we will be meeting on Day 4 of stations so usually they will read on Day 2
and then fill in their sheet onDay 3
and be ready to meet with the teacher on Day 4
of stations, which is really their 2nd group meeting with me or the teacher.
When we meet , we discuss the information from our “jobs.” For example: the Comprehension Checker shares what he/she found out and if the students worked independently, we compare responses and discuss it as a group. We go through each job in this manner. The second day we meet takes a bit longer, but we use this time to assign a new chapter and pick new jobs. Now that the story has already been set up at the beginning of the week, the students continue meeting with me 2 days each week until the story is completed.
These sheets may be used in many different capacities…the sky is the limit. You can use them in Guided Reading
groups as independent work
after the story or chapter has been read, as whole class responses when reading chapter books or in a Reading Station for independent reading responses (Read to Self or Read with a Partner )
