This product includes everything you need in order to assess the fidelity of a balanced literacy teaching framework school-wide and within individual classrooms. This tool is intended to be used to develop common understandings of what balanced literacy looks like in classrooms between teachers, literacy coaches, reading specialists, principals, and any other types of administrators.
Included in this product:
-Measuring Literacy Effectiveness: This evaluation tool is based off five categories (Classroom Organization, Gradual Release of Responsibility, Constructivism and Inquiry Based Learning, Reflective Teacher Practices, and Differentiated Instruction and Data). Each category lists criteria detailing what to look for and a place to check proficiency levels and add notes.
-Balanced Literacy Fidelity Tool: This fidelity evaluation tool separates balanced literacy into instructional contexts (General Classroom Observation, Through the Eyes of a Student, Whole Class Minilessons, Small Group Instruction, and Individualized Instruction). Each category lists "look for" items. This fidelity tool is not only for principals to use during walk throughs, it could also be used by literacy coaches and for teachers who want to gain an understanding of key places they should be hitting in order to teach using a Balanced Literacy teaching framework.
-Collective Commitments: The list of collective commitments included in this product is intended to give literacy teams a starting point for establishing criteria for what each literacy classroom can guarantee to students.
