Using Mentor Sentences is an authentic way to help make the editing process fun and risk free. It is an inquiry style, which is what my store Discovering New Knowledge is about. It is also aligned to Common Core. A must in every classroom! Short and simple daily lessons that students can use immediately in their own writing. Helen’s Eyes – a Photobiography of Annie Sullivan is a book that every 4th grade student in my district, Pinellas, is using as a Read Aloud and can be used for closed reading lessons as well. It seemed only natural after reading the beautiful language in this book to write a mentor sentence unit! I have included daily plans, the mentor sentences for the students as well as one to be posted in the class. I also have included daily invitation posters inviting the students to the particular stage in the process – invitation to notice, invitation to revise, invitation to imitate, and of course, invitation to celebrate!
