Resource Directions:

June Writing Station Words: Print and laminate a few colored copies of the June Writing Station words for students to use or copy one sheet for each student to put in their writing folder or journal.

“Commotion in the Ocean” Story Elements (2 types): After reading the story a few times, have students fill out the story elements: characters, setting, problem & ending., either by drawing or writing out with words.

“Commotion in the Ocean” Retelling (2 types): After reading the story a few times, have students fill out the story retelling organizer, beginning, middle, and ending of the story. One organizer has the boxes with lines and one is a whale shape tor organize the retelling.

“In the Ocean” Classroom Book: Copy cover on cardstock and then copy the student sheet for each student and have them write and draw what they know lives in the ocean. Collect each student paper and make classroom book binding or stapling book together.

“Our Favorite Ocean Animals” Classroom Book: Copy cover on cardstock and then copy the student sheet for each student and have them write and draw their favorite ocean animal. Collect each student paper and make classroom book binding or stapling book together.

Ocean Animals Venn Diagram: After reading many books about the different kinds of ocean animals students pick two ocean animals to compare. With younger students we did this as a group together, older students could handle this on their own as long as they are familiar with how to use a Venn diagram.

Ocean Acrostic Poem: Copy the Ocean Acrostic poem either on copy paper or cardstock. Students write words that begin with each of the
letters of the word OCEAN to complete the poem. You may display these poems in the classroom or hallway or make into classroom book.

“Whales Can” Classroom Book: Copy cover on cardstock and then copy a sheet for each student and have them write what they know whales can be or do. Collect each student paper and make classroom book binding or stapling book together.

Whales Acrostic Poem: Make a copy for each students and have them write things they know about whales using the first letters in the word whale. Note: For my students who were younger we did this activity with our 4th grade buddies.

Whales Venn Diagram :
After reading “Amazing Facts About Whales” and many other books about the different kinds of whales students picked two whales to compare. With younger students we did this as a group together, older students could handle this on their own as long as they are familiar with how to use a Venn diagram.

Whales Fact Sheet: After reading many books about the different kinds of whales students filled out his fact sheet about whales. With younger students we did this together or with our 4th grade buddies, older students should be able to do this sheet.

Ocean Mobile: Use a painted blue or blue paper plate with the ocean animal stamps provided to make a beautiful mobile to hang out in the hallway or in your classroom. This project can be done as a center, or with parent or buddy help with younger students.

“At the Beach” Classroom Book: Copy cover on cardstock and then copy the student sheet for each student and have them write and draw what a beach day looks like to them. Collect each student paper and make classroom book binding or stapling book together.
“Rainbow Fish Story Parts Organizer (2 types): After reading the story a few times, have students fill out the story parts organizer . They can either draw or write their answers on the sheet in the appropriate box.

“The Rainbow Fish” 5 W’s & How: After reading the story a few times, have students fill out the story organizer using the 5 W’s & How Story Organizer.

All About Fish Classroom Book: Copy cover on cardstock and then copy a sheet for each student and have them write what they know fish can be or do. Collect each student paper and make classroom book binding or stapling book together.

How Many Fish Booklet:
Students would work on this booklet throughout the first week of school practicing their colors and numbers. You can copy the pages on regular paper, they are printed so you can copy back to back to make individual student booklets.

Rainbow Fish Crackers Graph:
After reading the fish books, I would give students a handful of crackers and they would have to graph the crackers accordingly, coloring the fish and the squares with the appropriate colors.

Rainbow Fish Art Project:
Copy and assemble Rainbow Fish using the directions and template page in unit. Hang Fish in hallway or in the classroom for decorations.

Ocean Real & Nonsense Words: Children place cards face down and take turns drawing a card. Student reads words and decides whether it is a real word or nonsense words. Child checks with partner or group to make sure he/she is accurate. Child writes or places words on t-chart on white board or use sheet provided in this resource (each student may have a sheet or you could use one sheet for the whole game). The next person takes a turn. Play until all cards have been used.

Ocean Word Game:
Students insert vowels ocean animals (a, e, i, o & u) onto line on the word cards and make words. Students can write words on white boards or paper. They may also use the Make A Word worksheets included in this resource.

Ocean & Fish Addition & Subtraction: (2 different games) Children begin at start positon on board and take turns rolling one die. If they are adding they will begin on number 1 and slide down that many spaces as the die indicates. If they are subtracting they start on number 20 and move up the board, subtracting the number on the die. First person to get to the finish line wins!

Beach Roll & Cover Games :
(2 different games): One Dice Roll: 4 game cards. Roll one die and count your dots. Cover the number of dots you rolled with your marker. Two players will need to use two different colors. Covering the most numbers wins! Two Dice Roll: 4 game cards. Roll two die and count your dots. Cover the number of dots you rolled with your marker. Two players will need to use two different colors. Covering the most numbers wins!
