Product Description
Celebrate Reading!!
There are so many ways to use and add to this product. My initial thought was Children’s Book Week, which is celebrated each year usually end of April beginning of May. However, you can use this for ANY reading week you want at any time of the year.
Included in this product is a spirit week of activities that your school or you alone can do. I would suggest sending out the schedule to the community a week prior to the events. I have included two blank templates; one that says “Celebrate Children’s Book Week” and the other says “Celebrate Reading!”. that you can use to add your own ideas for the week. Also, I have included an editable version of mine that will allow you to actually put in the dates and if you want a message to the community.
Mine that is editable with the dates is as follows:
Read My Shirt day (with activity)
Hats Off to Reading! (with activity)
Books, Bears, and Blankets (with activity)
Character Dress-Up day
All School Read Out-(the whole school reads outside at the end of the day at the same time)
A bulletin board is included that features different trivia from well-known children’s books. with a banner that reads, “Celebrate Literacy”. This can be displayed as is or you can turn it into a contest with a Celebrate Literacy Challenge (sheet included) school-wide. Kids fill out the answers to the trivia and submit it to the main office and then a random drawing could happen and the winner could win a book or small prize. There are 15 trivia questions for the bulletin board. An answer key is included. Additionally, you could also read trivia over the PA system for an additional contest. There are 24 more trivia questions with answer forms for kids to fill out. You could do daily trivia! At the end of each day, you could have a drawing. You can use this for 5 years as there is enough trivia to last that long, at a reading week a year!
Also included are two different ballots that your school or class can use to vote for their favorite book or author. Graphing the results and displaying them is a big motivator for kids.
Lastly, I have included awards that you and your class can decide which books that you have read together or that are in your classroom library that they know and should be given a gold seal! You just need to purchase Avery Shipping Labels 85563 and viola’ you can cut them apart and affix them to the winner! So fun! There are 20 different labels for categories such as Class favorite, Best Ending, Funniest Character etc.
Within that week there are plenty of other activities you can do to promote the love of reading (see Other Ideas to Consider). as well as reading activities that your school can do with explanations of ways to use.
They are as follows:
Creating a bookmark
blank open book template-pages facing out
blank open book-spine facing out
Designing a cover-closed book template
flower template-Reasons I Read
Favorite book character scaffolded 3 different ways
“And the Award Goes to…” for favorite book or character
My Literacy Life-creating a timeline of mini books that kids can decorate and put on a personal timeline to show how their reading has evolved from books read to them to well-read favorites.
To recap, here is what is included:
