My Literacy word work time (word work with phonics and sight words) is focused on personalized learning for each student and driven by student choice. This is a very fast growing trend now recognized in research to raise student achievement and engagement. As teachers, we already know it to just be optimal teaching but it can be hard to manage! I found fantastic student achievement doing it this way, and it isn’t difficult on my end! In fact, it requires very little prep and the students are in charge of their learning. My time can be focused on individual student needs instead of trying to find a specific phonics worksheet amongst a million packets. Many times, those sheets only take 5 minutes to complete and it’s just a bunch of circling and such. What about the child that already knows that skill or set of sight words? I want a more structured and effective approach to their learning, learning the words and skills that they need to know, not words they already know!

All of my word work activities focus on the KIDS writing and reading the words for practice. Simple. Writing the words cements it in their little brains. Every time they read and write the word, the sooner they learn it. And, I have found that a typical student plays one game with their words in only one sitting and they gain most of them when I test them again. They didn’t waste time working with words they already know! They worked with the words they didn’t know.
Students choose the activity they want to do. When they can choose, they are much more engaged! They add the words that apply to their personalized learning~ from the sight word list or phonics skill you want them to use. These 9 activities last the whole year. Some students love the consistency of doing the same game over and over, and others change often. The words are always changing, so I never hear a whine about word work time!
