How we used these literacy center cards in our classroom:
**************************************************************************************

These activities were designed for a grade four class but can be used as independent activities for junior level students. Our literacy centers would take up one block a day and would be followed by a whole-class literacy lesson.

Activity cards were arranged in colour coded bins for students to independently select. Various other activities were found in bins however these activity cards can serve as a greater starting point for building strong literacy centers.

Students were organized into levelled groups based on assessment. Students began each day by locating their daily task on their centers schedule.

Our literacy centers were organized on a day 1- 5 schedule with the following daily options:
**********************************************************************
1)Reading Response activity cards are based on either a class read aloud or student independent novels. Some days students would select an activity card and other days I would assign a cross-curricular reading and questions or online article.
2)Writer’s workshop is where students would fine tune writing skills. This would be a time to rework a previous task with feedback in mind. Metacognitive skills are reinforced here as students would complete writing goal worksheets and resubmit reworked tasks. If nothing was to be reworked, students completed one of the creative writing cards attached in this file.
3) Vocabulary skills- activity cards as well as additional activates were selected from the vocabulary bin. Also under the day 3 option was Media Literacy and inquiry. (Media literacy or Inquiry- can include online articles, researching tasks, internet safety activities, Genius Hour, research tasks, story quilts, advertisements, blogging etc )
4) Guided reading or independent reading
5) Teacher conference. During this time students would sit with the teacher and review what they had worked on over the last week. This conversation would serve as assess for and of student learning.
