The Literacy sTArs: Literacy Skills Activity Book for Elementary (grades 2-3) offers a series of powerful literacy activities and skills teachers use to:
improve students' reading comprehension;
enhance instruction through engaging activities;
increase students' ability to read, speak, and write about fiction and non-fiction texts; and
successfully implement College and Career Readiness standards.
Five core reading skills: (1) make predictions, (2) ask questions, (3) draw pictures of main ideas, (4) mark important information, and (5) organize main ideas.
6 sequenced reading lessons for fiction and 6 for non-fiction text
Spiraled skills and language resources to support students as they work to improve their comprehension skills
Interactive activities that challenge and motivate students as they participate in various reading, speaking, and writing activities
A simple roadmap for effective implementation of Common Core College and Career Anchor Standards for reading, writing, and listening/speaking
When using the activity book, we recommend starting with short texts (no longer than two pages) or chunk lengthier texts into shorter, more manageable reading assignments. Length and sophistication of text should increase as students demonstrate proficiency in reading.
How it Helps
Mastery of the select literacy strategies is just one goal of the workbooks. The sound instructional methods and powerful pedagogy, that are the foundation of the LiteracyTA activity books, model effective pacing and literacy instruction. The strategies and activities are carefully selected and sequenced to maximize student growth and engagement. As a result of using the workbook, students will learn how to read more critically and improve their ability to read independently.
