This PowerPoint can be used with or without manipulatives. If you would like to use manipulatives, create and laminate cards for each student or group of students with the letters a, b, c, d and e. You need both positive and negatives along with symbols for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and equals. There are 6 examples of solving literal equations which you can cover using the PowerPoint alone or by having students create the equations with their laminated cards. After practicing solving literal equations, students are given a real life literal equation to solve and 2 examples of using it to predict a future value. The lesson concludes by asking students to write a journal entry about where they would need literal equations in the real world.
