Literary Activities – Designed to be used with any novel or short story, these literary activities are intended to be completed in groups and can be used during the reading of a text and/or at the end of the reading. Each of the six activities takes about 10 minutes to complete. If teachers ask students to share their work with the class, the duration of class time would span between two and four days. The activities include Venn diagrams, sentence blanks, and conflict charts. Students visualize the text in Activity #1, discuss the text in Activity #2, and identify cause and effect in the text in Activity #3. Activities #4-6 focus on inferential and analytical thinking though the completion of sentence blanks and diagrams. Supporting the synthesis and analysis of fictional texts, the Literary Activities Handout is a double-sided answer sheet, complete with directions and graphic organizers.
