If you feel like taking home stacks of papers to grade on the weekends (and bringing that same stack back on Monday ungraded) is going to be your life forever - think again! This Rubric Starter Kit is exactly what you need to reshape and rethink your essay grading life. This rubric is designed for the busy teacher who wants to improve her writing instruction and also reduce the amount of time she spends grading.

The rubric is set up with five main categories: CLAIM, DEVELOPMENT, COHESION, and STYLE & CONVENTIONS. I've annotated the document with notes so that you can see exactly how I use it in my classroom!

  1. This entire product is editable, so every element is both ready for you to print/use and go OR ready to be changed to match your specific needs.
  2. A five category detailed rubric (designed by me and used over a decade of writing instruction experience)
  3. CLAIM - mini rubric that focuses on one skill at a time
  4. DEVELOPMENT - mini rubric that focuses on one skill at a time
  5. COHESION - mini rubric that focuses on one skill at a time
  6. BLANK - a completely blank template is yours to use and edit as you like
  7. A GOOGLE SHEETS version of your rubric - use this for digital grading with Doctopus and Goobric
  8. Access to a blog post that provides guidance for implementation. Check it out here!
  9. Directions and a template for Google Slides to share common errors with students after all papers are graded. This is a favorite technique of mine that helps cut down on the time spent writing individual feedback on papers.

You're spending way too much time "grading" and not enough time providing feedback. Let the rubric do MORE of the work so that you can assign writing more often (with this rubric you'll feel less overwhelmed!) and you can take back your life from the black hole nightmare of grading.
