Writing is hard. Writing literary analysis is even harder!
If your students have never had to write a literary analysis paper or if they struggle with writing, the step by step formula for thesis statements and intro paragraphs in this packet will hopefully make things much easier for them and you. A WARNING: The methods in this packet are very formulaic. I know many teachers are against writing formulas. However, it has been my experience that many of my students NEED a formula, at least at the beginning. If you do not like using writing formulas, perhaps this isn’t the best choice of activities for you.
In this packet, students are led through the development of a WORKING THESIS STATEMENT and an INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH for a Literary Analysis Essay.
First, students are given notes and instruction on literary thesis statements. Students will then be given a formula for writing a thesis statement along with two examples. Then, students will write a practice thesis statement using the formula and a poem they have been given. This activity can be done as a whole class exercise, a small group exercise, or an individual exercise. Finally, students will write a working thesis for their own paper.
Notes and instruction on writing introductory paragraphs for literary essays follow next. Students are then given an example introductory paragraph to review before being asked to write their own.
There is a PowerPoint presentation to accompany the notes for the thesis and the introductory paragraph.
