What makes literature “classic?” It seems that the same literature is taught to high school students for decades. Take a short story and analyze it. Why is the same literature re-taught? Is there a reason? Students were asked to work in a group to answer such questions. Groups chose a short story from a list of options.
To analyze the qualities of classic literature, students were asked to use the SIFT^2 Method of Literary Analysis. Students' knowledge (SIFT^2 knowledge) of the short story was reflected in a unique product created by their group. There are four options listed in this document, but groups could request a meeting with me to discuss other innovative options to present their knowledge.
This assignment was given to seniors but can easily by tailored to other secondary students.
