Simple and easy to use, this Literary Terms template provides a structured method for students to analyze the different components of a narrative text or video and to identify its main parts. One way I have used it in my own classroom is to first teach the different terms. Next, my students and I will read a short story together. After reading it, I facilitate a discussion of the text that is aligned to the terms in this template. As we discuss, I project the template on my smartboard and write in the applicable responses. After our discussion, I introduce my students to another short story and have them read it individually before completing the template with a partner. We then review their responses. In my classroom, I use this template each time we read a narrative text as a way to have a common language and framework for analyzing it. Once my students are comfortable using the template (usually it takes 3-4 times), I use it as a springboard into other activities like Readers Theatre, writing assignments, and more!
I have uploaded the template as a Word document, so it can be easily shared with students using Google Drive, posting it to a class website, or printing it out.
