Before diving into a Literary Analysis essay of a novel, short story, or poem, students need practice analyzing literary elements in something that is understandable and highly engaging. Today's students find The Matrix fascinating; surprisingly few students have even heard of it before! This activity guides students through the process of identifying themes, symbols, irony, character archetypes, and plot archetypes in 2 short clips from The Matrix. Then, for the Exit Ticket, students write out an analysis of how the director expresses a theme through 3 of the four other literary techniques. I highly recommend doing the first part as a whole class - students love discussing the movie in pairs and as a class!
