This is a two-day literary analysis activity created for the 9th grade English classroom. However, this activity could be altered for lower or higher grade levels.
The Literary Character Body-Biography Activity allows students to get out of their seats and, in the words of Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird, "climb into someone's skin and walk around in it." Students will, in groups of 4, collaborate to create a biographical analysis of a selected character from a novel. The assignment also provides a brief introduction to symbolism by having students symbolize various aspects of their chosen character's personality, priorities, or beliefs. Students must use 8 symbolic representations with supporting text evidence to describe their character.
There is a complete grading rubric for the Character Biography activity included. However, the "Group Work Grading Rubric" is sold separately.
This lesson is created for a total duration of 2 days; however, it may take longer depending on how familiar the students are with character analysis or how detailed and creative you would like the end products to be.
When the students' Character Body-Biographies are finished, hang them down your hallway to show off your students' work and add some "character" to your school walls!
