If your middle school students are anything like mine, they find it difficult to go beyond a simple summary when writing an essay about a novel.
This assignment and essay outline will help them progress from comprehension to criticism. They will learn that to critique a book is "to judge" a book. The essay outline provided will help them write an ORGANIZED essay evaluating the plot and the characters within the novel.
In addition to the essay instructions and outline, I've also included instructions for a fun art project to go along with their essays. They will create a new book cover for the novel they are writing about.
This assignment will work for any novel and can be done as homework or in class.
The handout is a Microsoft Word document allowing you to tweak the assignment to fit your specific learning goals and your students' needs.
