Teaching students how to judge literature is challenging, but it can be accomplished in a way that’s interesting and fun for all! This Classic Unit is comprised of four lessons that will both interest and engage your class while learning about literature.
The unit begins with identifying and defining the term “classic” from classic cars to art, music, literature, etc. – Teacher picks the categories. Students then identify classics and fads from their own lives, and this is a springboard for discussions on what exactly is good literature. Students work in groups or as a class to add to a list of classic literature and consider their own criteria for “good literature.”
This unit is scaffolded and differentiated. Teachers decides on groups and group discussions, and Teacher determines how closely to examine Classic Literature List as well. Teacher can also alter time needed for each lesson based on student understanding and need. This unit is appropriate for all levels of high school, and works just as well at the middle school level, too. Two versions of a quiz/test are also included.
I always start my school year with this Classic Unit, and have been doing this for twenty years. Students still come up to me and fondly remember this fun unit.
Kid-tested and teacher-approved! Yours from Paradise Unlimited New England!
