1. Work with students to create a short story chart and a poetry chart as a class. Students should keep these charts in their notebooks as examples. (You may want to keep a short story chart and a poetry chart on display in the classroom. Students can then make their own charts on notebook paper, which will save you time and paper.)
2. Students should complete a chart for each short story and poem read.
3. As a final project, have students work in pairs or small groups to complete and present a chart for a short story and a poem. (Students could create their charts on poster board or newsprint and include a drawing of their favorite scene from the story or poem.)
