Literary devices exist everywhere – in popular songs, famous films, advertisements. I am constantly searching for them. I wanted to instill that same drive in my students, so teaching literary devices has always been an important part of my classroom curriculum. It enhances students' reading of text and provides tools to enhance their writing.
This is a presentation that I used for my seventh grade class to review previously learned literary devices and introduce new ones. In sixth grade, my students learned foreshadowing, allusion, symbolism, and simile. This presentation reviews those literary devices and adds metaphor, personification, and flashback. The presentation includes definitions, examples, practice, and links/video clips.
