This unit teaches students a wide range of literary devices in order to get them more familiar with figurative language. It includes a PowerPoint that explains what literary devices are and reviews the definitions and examples of 12 different ones (symbolism, alliteration, personification, irony, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, allusion, oxymoron, imagery, euphemism, and foreshadowing). In addition, it also teaches about tone, mood, syntax, and diction.
This unit includes 2 crossword puzzles to help students practice identifying different literary devices. An end-of-the-unit exam is also included where students need to match the definitions with the various terms and practice identifying literary devices in several given poems. Answer keys for both are included.
I always do this in the beginning of the year as a foundation / review in all of my English and literature classes. It has worked very well with my students, and they always have a great time with the crossword puzzles. I recently redid these to make them more aesthetically-appealing as well (which is important to me!). I hope you enjoy them and find them as helpful as I do in my classroom!
