Literary Elements Questions and Prompts

This resource contains over 80 reading comprehension questions and reader response prompts to use for the study of literary elements after reading ANY fictional text. They can be used for guided reading groups, after read alouds, during whole-class shared reading activities, for partner discussions after independent reading, or for language centers. Comprehension questions satisfy common core standards for Reading Standards for Literature (1-10), and Reading Standards for Informational Text (1-10).

There are 5 different groups of questions and prompts - one group for each literary element: author's purpose, characterization, figurative language, point of view, and tone and mood. Each group of questions will make its own fan. You can use a particular fan when studying a particular element, or use different fans to reinforce reading comprehension and literary elements throughout the year. You could also group all the questions together on a binder clip circle and hang near your desk for easy access during reading activities.

I have also included a sheet of blank frames for each literary element so you can include your own questions. These frames are not editable, so you will have to write in your added questions.

The question sheets should be printed out on cardstock or on regular paper and laminated for extra durability. Cut out the individual questions and punch a small hole in the end of each question. Questions can then be put together with a brass fastener or a binder ring to keep them together.
