I believe in challenging my students. While studying the short story genre, students in Advanced Placement to remedial reading will find that these 22 literary devices/elements are commonly used in short stories. They will define these elements as well as practice analyzing quotes to explain how the author uses the devices by creating their own glossary of literary devices including their description of the effect of the device on the short story. Terms include but are not limited to characters (static, dynamic, foil, flat, round), foreshadowing, flashback, etc. This activity is flexible and can be used as an independent project, a whole class activity, or a small group activity allowing teachers to use it with any ability level--remedial, standard, Honors, Pre-Advanced Placement, Pre-International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate.
