Teacher modeling is one strategy that is proven to improve the quality of writing students produce. Modeling can be challenging for teachers, so I am sharing a writing sample for you to share with your students. My students helped me craft this literary essay in five sessions using:

My students and I worked together to craft this piece and then they wrote their own literary essays. There are additional materials including powerpoint presentations and daily exit slips that support this document.
Students can also look critically at this exemplar and suggest revisions. The lexile level is included so you can determine if your students can read it independently or if they need you to read it aloud.
