I planned to do the MAISA Literary Essay with my students but realized that they would be more successful completing a one-paragraph essay instead of a five-paragraph essay. Since I only teach writing and not reading, my students didn't have a library of short stories that they had read during the year. Because I wanted my students to see me as a writer, I offered a blend of short stories written by famous authors and myself. (This pdf has each story with numbers showing where students should add a box on their Flow Maps.) This pdf includes all of the Common Core Standards I was planning on hitting with the MAISA unit. It also includes how to tackle Essay Questions, how to paraphrase, and how to include direct quotes into an essay.
