Product Description
This activity was inspired by my amazing 2nd grade teacher. I can still remember walking into her jungle themed classroom and feeling like a true explorer. I wanted to recreate this feeling for my high school students as they struggled to remember advanced literary and rhetorical terms and sentence styles and types. Embracing the explorer theme, I created this activity so that students would explore the terms to deepen their understanding while also making it more memorable.

This activity comes with four stations, an Explorer's Journal that matches the stations activity for students to complete as they move through the stations, and an answer key. The Explorer's Journal comes in pamphlet, packet, and digital versions.

To keep with the explorer's theme, all of the examples in this activity are taken from classic or famous stories about jungles, journeys, treasures, expeditions, and travel. For this activity, they will work their way in small groups or independently through four stations:
1. Finding Figurative Language requires students to look around the room for quotations on leaves that they will match to the definitions provided in their journals.
2. Peaceful Pacing and Parallelism instructs students to explore the effects of pacing. They will answer questions and provide examples related to pacing literary and rhetorical terms.
3. Sentence Species engages students in an identification challenge by asking them to use the index in their Explorer’s Journal to identify types of sentences.
4. Deserted Diction prompts students to watch a short video linked with a QR-code. Then, they will research terms related to diction. This station requires a device for students to research.
