Use this as an opening activity, after a lesson on the genres of literature, as a center activity or assessment. It includes nine fiction and nonfiction genre cards and book covers of 18 books. Teams of students must look at all the “puzzle” pieces and decide how to organize them. It leads to great discussions and thinking about genre and books. Once students have had a chance to organize/finish the puzzle, we have a discussion about why the books fit in each genre category and why some might fit in more than one category. For students in grades 4 - 7, as well as 3rd, but might eliminate a few categories to simplify.
Print out one set per team of 3-5 students. I print them on different colors of cardstock so they are easily sorted if they happen to get mixed up. I can provide this in Microsoft Word if you would like to edit to meet your needs or library collection. Let me know! Enjoy! My students did!
