This 40-slide PowerPoint is designed for students studying the genres of literature. After being introduced to three nonfiction genres, six fiction genres, and five traditional genres, students will be given many opportunities to read a book summary and identify the genre based on the description.

The PowerPoint follows this basic layout:

Slide 1: Title Page

Slides 2-4: Fiction and Nonfiction Review

Slides 5-8: A Closer Look at Nonfiction Genres (Informational, Biography, Autobiography)

Slides 9-15: A Closer Look at Fiction Genres (Realistic Fiction, Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Fantasy, Poetry)

Slides 16-22: Folk Tales (part of fiction) Fairy Tale, Tall Tale, Myth, Fable, Legend)

Slides 23-31: Let's Review Type 1: A paragraph describes what a child is reading. Students must name the genre and then identify key words within the paragraph that helped them to determine the genre.

Slides 31-41: Review Type 2: Students are shown a sample book cover (with title) and the blurb on the back of the book. They must name the genre of the book.

This file also includes a 5-page PowerPoint companion handout. Students will remain especially engaged when they write on their own handout as you advance through the PowerPoint. When complete, they have a valuable tool for future reference! The companion handout is available in both printable format or digital format. The digital version is compatible with Google Slides.
