The students will choose an Accelerated Reader book they have read this year and write a literary letter (using a friendly letter format) to his/her teacher. This document gives the students step-by-step directions on how they will write their letter.
Students will be reflecting on what they comprehended from their book by responding to several questions. Through this exercise the teacher will assess students' reading comprehension, learn about the significance of the book the student chose and their ability to write to explain their thinking. Students are also encouraged to use text evidence to support their writing.
I have also included an easy-to-use grading rubric to help the teacher as they grade this letter. The focus is on correct letter writing format, correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, neatness, book comprehension, etc.
This structure can be used several times throughout the year as a way for students to respond about their reading. It is easy to use with your students and ready to implement in your classroom tomorrow! Enjoy!
** If you use the Accelerated Reader program - you will want to use this! I have created another one that does not reference the Accelerated Reader program and that is more generic for all classrooms.
