This supplemental unit is perfect for growing class camaraderie and encouraging reluctant readers to read and participate.
I created this unit out of necessity.
I was facing a class of 11th graders who refused to read and who refused to talk to each other. They did not care about learning the content and they did not care about making good grades. They did not even care to learn each others' names!
But what they DID care about was winning. They loved competing against each other. This unit solved BOTH of my problems! The survivor unit-long competition forced them to read and it forced them to work together. They knew that they could not win if a single person slacked on reading the novel, so they encouraged each other to complete the reading! Score 1 for teacher!
My students had a blast and they learned a lot about teamwork and leadership along the way.
To win this survivor competition, teams (tribes) earn points over the course of the unit for scoring high on book quizzes, solving TED Ed. logic riddles, displaying the best book knowledge, and winning teamwork challenges.
